These pictures are awesome. I might have to lurk here a little while to see them all.

The expressions on the stone statuaries are awesome. The placement of the hands in each instance is peculiar, and adds incredibly to the over all feeling. Great pieces.

The middle piece comes off as a modern update on Rodin's "The Thinker." The torment again... Proper materials too in constructions...

Great post. Interesting mix. Thanks for sharing.

Manny, thanks for dropping by. Lurk all you like.

Fool, those stone statuaries really are something, aren't they? I love their expressions. They do look a little mad, don't you think?

Reverend, Yes, what indeed? It's kind of like asking what's normal.

I love the middle one, Carla. Love 'em all actually. But the middle one: where? who?

Hello JBelle, the middle picture is quite moving to actually exerience. The sculpture, titled "The Ordeal," was created by Hamburg artist Edith Breckwoldt for the memorial site of Sandborstel which was, until 1945, one of the Nazi's largest prisoner camps. More that 50,000 people from many countries met their death there. The sculpture's pedestal is built from the original stones of the prisoners' barracks. The statue is presently located in a bombed out cathedral in Hamburg, which of course also adds to the overall affect.

On a plaque underneath are written the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

No man in the whole world
can change the truth.
One can only look for the truth,
find it and serve it.
The truth is in all places.

We need to open our eyes, heart and mind to see the truth.
(and take the camera, LOL)
Hamburg is always a great place to visit, I love it up there.

Great photos! I love gargoyles. I spent a long time photographing the ones on Notre Dame.
