Variations on the Word Sleep

I would like to watch you sleeping,
which may not happen.
I would like to watch you,
Sleeping. I would like to sleep
with you, to enter
your sleep as its smooth dark wave
slides over my head.

And walk with you through that lucent
wavering forest of bluegreen leaves.
with its watery sun and three moons
towards the cave where you must descend
towards your worst fear.

I would like to give you the silver
branch, the small white flower, the one
word that will protect you
from the grief at the centre
of your dream, from the grief
at the centre. I would like to follow
you up the long stairway
again and become
the boat that would row you back
carefully, a flame
in two cupped hands
to where your body lies
beside me, and you enter
it as easily as breathing in.

I would like to be the air
that inhibits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
and that necessary.

~M Atwood

JBelle, everything always looks brighter after a good sleep, doesn't it? Your good mood goes along with the sunshine here.

H'lo Nomad. Margaret has such a beautiful way with words. In a single breath she can outline the quest of a lifetime that is in each of us. May you find your Grail.

Now I know what Margaret Atwood was famous for. She wrote books too right? I know I know...I should read more.

Putting the visuals there enhanced the poetry.

Thank you Carla. It came at the right time. Good night.

Fool, How have you been? I've been enjoying your posts (sans comments). Yes, Margaret really was magical with her words in this one. A toast to finding our "grails."

Sidar, Yes, indeed, she has also written books. I am always amazed though at the depth that one can achieve in a small space.

Fede, You are most welcome and good night to you as well.

A wonderful text, by a writer I admire very much.

"The Handmaid's Tale" is one of my favourite novels.

Winters, I too enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale. Atwood has a lovely way with words.
