Mutti has been busy cleaning, cleaning, cleaning...purging, emotional cleansing, whatever you wish to call it. In the process, she has rediscovered some long since forgotten treasures tucked away quietly at the bottom of some drawer. Notice how in one year I've developed defined feet and hands. Yep, clubfoot was not a good look for me. It looks like my circulation has also improved significantly. I'm pretty sure that this was before the time of skin coloured crayons, but obviously I made do. So what sort of things do you have lying quietly at the bottom of your drawers?

This is just too darn cute. I remember when I had this obsession with making sure that I wore earrings in my drawings -- large hoope types, tiny flowers, diamonds, etc. The fashionista at such a young age. And then I find out I'm allergic to wearing them, no matter if they are silver or gold.
I have...candy wrappers at the bottom of my drawers!
Aw... so cute. How lovely to see this now :)
You actually have old things like that? Wow. I'm amazed. I've moved far too many times and keeping things like that would have been... impossible. (Thinking: I really wouldn't want to see anything like that anyway. :)

So SWEET!!! You make me want to go back in time and tell my kids to draw themselves! I have short letters from my mom in my drawers and my old driver's ID at age 17.
Rowena, I'm sure that I had obsessions like that as well. I can only wear gold in my ears.
Guilty, It's always interesting when you find things from long ago. The memories. I've kept old notes and letters from friends. Whoa, the memories.
Chani, Actually, no, I don't have things like that. It was my mother who had kept these drawings from so many years ago. I don't think she even knew that she still had them.
Envoy-ette, Letters from Mom are a precious thing to have. I think I might have old university id in a box somewhere around here.
Howdy do! Thanky fer yore visit to the Front Porch. I'se reall tickled to come see your blog--
I'se amazed over heah at yore place--wow, youse really doing it? Sustainability? It's a dream I entertain. (Does ya know Wendell Berry? A poet? He wrote a fine little book on local economies, called ANOTHER TURN OF THE CRANK)
An' yore self portraits? Wonderful! I notice how at six ya had quite a fashion sense. B 7 youse into sporty look---ah, but was you expectin a baby at 6? (smile...)
So please to "meet" you Carla.
Aunty Belle, So welcome to my little spot here on the net. Yep, at six I was into those short little Holly Hobby dresses with the puffed sleeves and cute little aprons. I'm wondering about that purple outfit. It looks like the top laces up. I remember a knit purple outfit like that, but I was sure it was a skirt and not shorts...but I may be wrong.
As for sustainability, it's a dream and a work in progress. Wish I could do more, be more efficient, but all in good time I suppose. In summer it's not too tough, but not much grows here in the winter. Like I said, a work in progress. And thanks for the heads up on the book. I'll be sure to check it out.
There is something inside Carla at age 6. Am I wrong?
Good night and good luck.
As Fuser, I see a little draw over or inside you? Is it a doll? Anyway youir drwas are perfect even without ears and feet. Beautiful post!
I loved that you toned down your lipstick at age 7.
Carla, I got that you were wearing an embroidered pinafore; I should have know it was Holly hobby!
aack! doorbell rang! wasn't finished! anyway, I knew it was an embroidered pinafore but I didn't guess it was Holly Hobbie. Should have. :) I took all those pictures done by the kids who used to live here, framed them and hung them in the den. They are pretty cute and I am so glad I have them. But not as glad as the artists who now come around and marvel at how talented they were at such an early age!
Fuser, Only six year old Carla knows.
Aaouie, I believe it was probably a Holly Hobbie character, but I might be mistaken. She was extremely popular back then.
Carla, I was going for the natural look by then.
JBelle, I would love to see your den. I bet it's fabulous.
Very very cute and nice memories. My parents have still my drawings too and I collect all drawings from my girls!
Steffi, I am sure that the drawings from your girls are treasures that you will always cherish...beautiful memories of innocent times.
How wonderful; self portraits. Good thing you did an updated portrait when 7; you were looking much better. I have some things from my childhood but nothing so pictorial. In fact I have a distinct recollection of that very assignment in grade one. It must have been part of the curriculum. I had to bring it home as homework (probably because of my struggle to do it in class). I remember working on it on the floor in the bedroom I shared with my sister and my mom and teacher came in (she had stayed with us as a student teacher the hear before and knew my parents), and they encouraged me. I needed encouragement, because try as I might, I could not draw me to look like me (perfectionist that I was). They told me to draw a stick person. Frankly, although I was much thinner back then, the stick person did not resemble me and it was the first assignment I handed in with the attitude of making a halfway effort that was good enough for them, but an utter disappointment to me.
Dawn, That's amazing you remember that assignment and all the events surrounding it so vividly. You sound like quite a perfectionist. I was too, but apparently not with drawings like this. But I do remember other assignments...I probably didn't worry much as I was always at the top of my class with the exception of spelling.
Whether you're six OR seven...you're still a cutie pie!!!
Jillie, You are just too kind. I am sure that you were just as cute and still are.
That's funny...I was cleaning things out too and found a big box of stuff I did when I was in grade school. We used that big line paper too!
I'm always amazed at some of the things people have collected.
Inevitably anything I've meant for a keepsakes has ended up thrown away at some point.
Quite the little artist -- and aware of your growth as well.
VE, I think that big lined paper was standard fare back then. Funny though to find those things.
Pamela, Yep, a lot of things like that I've ended up getting rid of in the midst of one move or another, but I still have a few things, and they are always a surprise to find...mainly the memories.
so much better than a camera - those self-portraits! i love them.
i just put some dotty liners in my drawer bottoms!
Pandave, That's a lovely thing to have in the bottom of your drawers.
H'lo Nomad. I am charmed by the self portraits. I've seen many in my tenure, and they always speak volumes. You must have been quite the child, and you still possess that endearing smile...indeed.
Fool, No doubt you have come across many similar self portraits. And they really do comment on one's view of the world, don't they? And yes, I was always a smiley one.
