He sits like a duck...waddles like a penguin...and squawks like a bird.
I found this friendly little fellow wandering around Long Beach. I'll be posting some pictures of the area shortly, but in the meantime thought I'd share his photo. He waddled right up to me in the most leisurely manner. He was not shy at all. In fact, he came so close that I had to change the lens on my camera to get a proper shot of him.
Obviously not camera shy at all, he would pose, then shift back and forth on his little webbed feet, eying me coyly to make sure I was catching all of his antics on film. This went on for quite a while. When I would take a step back, he'd follow as fast as his unstable little legs could carry him. Perhaps he thought I had some treat that I would bestow upon him for posing so nicely.
Finally he stretched up his fluffy feathered wings, let out a little squawk and plopped back down onto his belly exhausted from all the fuss.
Does anyone know what type of bird he is?

I would say one crazy looking bird. Did God have left over parts for that one? He is adorable though ;o)
Not sure what kind of bird it is but if you ask me...I'd say there was a penguin that was testing the waters...if you know what I mean :-)))
I am not sure of the type of bird either. We went to Long Beach years ago, but didn't see one of those. He is cute and it was great he gave you such a show. Great photos, I see you have put your name on them; it's a good idea.
Jillie, You changed your profile photo! Looks great. He was a cute little bird, even if he looked a little odd.
Sirdar, Yep, wouldn't be surprised if a penguin had been on the loose.
Dawn, I had thought about putting my name on my photos earlier, but then I'd always remember after they had been uploaded. But, yep, I thought I'd try it out.
Great looking bird.. although I can't honestly say I know what kind of bird he is. Not a gull, eh? :)
Chani, Doesn't look like any sort of gull I've ever seen. And it really did walk like a penguin. From a ways back, one could have honestly mistaken the poor fellow for a penguin.
I am somewhat mystified to as to what it actually is..
Your photographs are indeed a joy to see and as Dawn said - a wise idea for you to place your identity on them too.
Philosophy of Life, Mystified is a good word. He was such an odd little water fowl.
That´s a crazy bird!Just I thought it is a penguin.Good pictures!
Wow, he is cute! I would be too scared to let him get that close, though!
Don't know what bird it is, but what great photos you've taken!
adorable
Don't you just love being "mother nature"?
I'd say he's a bird, madly in love with you

she's a pill but talented
Don't know what kind of bird he is, however sounds like he was enjoying you.
Wish I had an answer for you but he most certainly is a ham for the camera! I can't even get the ducks at the lake to come up close. But then that's probably because the dog is right there waiting....
Steffi, Actually, when I first saw the bird walking from a distance, I too was sure it was a penguin. That left me rather confused.
Guilty Secret, He seemed relatively harmless. He came close, but still kept enough space to leave me comfortable.
Paris Parfait, Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed them.
Tracey, He certainly was a ham for the camera. I hope Raymi ends up winning.
Mark, He certainly was a cute little fellow.
Rowena, Yep, having a little canine around does make the ducks keep their distance.
Looks like a Murre or a Murrelet. Could be wrong. Either way, it's pretty darn cute.
Uniquely special. It's Nomad Bird!
:)
Bohemian Girl, Thanks. You're the first to have some sort of idea of what kind of bird he might be.
Fool, I think you just might be right. You just might be right.
Wow great photos.
I would have to agree with Bohemiangirl that it is a type of Murrelet, but I thought they were mostly sea coast birds. Perhaps he's on a bit of a holiday.
Burdock boy, I took the photos at Long Beach...so technically it is a sea coast. Now I wonder, does one find them on the west coast?
I would definitely say it is a Common Murre, here is a link for you...http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/164/_/target.aspx
Great photos!
A Mystery, Thanks for dropping by, and for the link. I'll definitely check it out.
What a cutie~ and the pictures are great! You captured him perfectly.
Sandi, He was a real "ham" for the camera. And yep, I agree...he is a cutie.
common murre in winter plumage
Pamela, That seems to be the consensus. Thanks for the confirmation.
