Shoe's Off

So as I said earlier, last weekend was the celebration of the reopening of the Capitol Theatre. There was much fanfare and the whole town was a twitter. The Capitol put on a fabulous show celebrating the diverse talent of this region...and I can't tell you just how much talent there is here. It gives me shivers just thinking about it. We saw singers, musicians, stand-up comedians, choirs, soloists, and the list goes on.

Until one has been to a truly local Nelson event, one can't quite grasp how intimate these shows can be. Of course when we invite outsiders to perform for us, there is never quite the same back and forth banter as we are really on our best behaviour for our out of town guests. But this was, in all senses, a local event, almost like a talent show one would hold in one's own living room, like the ones we used to put on when we were children to entertain the adults...but of course with much more talent.

The evening finished off with the showing of "Shoes Off," a Canadian short flick which I will share with you shortly. There are so many things about this little movie that are so Canadian, I could probably write another post about just that. But you need to know the local connection, so I will try to focus. The music was written by our very own, very talented Don McDonald. My understanding is that Don actually won a Cannes for this particular musical score. But the connection doesn't stop there. The soprano that you hear towards the end of the movie is Alison Girvan, Don's beautiful and equally talented wife. The violinist, Wendy Herbison, is another long time local, in fact, she was both of my sisters' music teacher for many years. So without any further delay, please join me in watching "Shoe's Off."

Oh, I so loved it. What a marvellous little film and the music was great. I loved the toilet brush and that she was wearing sock in her boots and didn't take them off at the party and the whole skewer falling was hilarious. Thanks for sharing this.

Dawn, Isn't it just delightful? And I so identify with the sock in the boots. I've been in that very situation myself. And the whole party scene was an absolute riot.

Pamela, A real chick flick, isn't it?

Nicely done. I enjoyed it 'cause it grabbed my attention till the end. And yes, the party scene is as hilarious as when someone drops his contacts. Thanks.
Good night and good luck.

I really enjoyed that, and loved the way it was filmed.

Fede, I didn't know that dropping contacts was funny, but I did find the party scene amusing. Had to feel for the guy. Things were looking pretty tough there for a bit.

Tracey, So did I. Not bad for a short Canadian flik.

Not the act of dropping lens by itself, but the instants right after the owner realizes it, and imposes the folks around him/her not to move. And there a careful hunt starts, with a general and methodical contribution of everybody. It becomes a surgical operations, just like what they were trying to do with the carpet. Well, that's what it reminded me of.
Night.

rats! it cut off at the party scene! But I loved it, as much as I saw of it. The music was phenomenal. I hope it get to see the Capitol Theatre. And a big yay yay yay for Nelson, for stepping up. YAY!

Very funny, and for me another quasi-mystical blogoshere experience about human connections. I once convinced, quite jokingly, a nurse with whom I worked that I was a podophile. (It was in a psychiatric hospital for heavens sake!) She took the situation so seriously that I couldn't help myself in exploiting it. I am a bad man. Anyway, I never fully persuaded her I was kidding. I think I'll send her the film.

Fede, Ah, I get it now. Yes, I can see how the situation could easily become comical.

JBelle, The music is amazing. I've watched the video a few times now, and sometimes just for the music. It fits perfectly. If you have a chance to watch again, the party scene will not disappoint.

Randy, It sounds like you have a good sense of humour. I probably would have been tempted to exploit the situation as well.

I had my 'air freshner' - just in case when I read the title of "shoe's off"....

Hello again.

Sounds like a great event. I wish I would have been there. I do plan on taking a trip up there to beautiful Nelson soon though.

I can't watch the film now because I'm in a cafe and I left my earphones in the car.

Peter, That's so funny about the "air freshner." Hopefully it didn't "stink" too much.

Burdock Boy, Hello, so nice to see you around again. I hope all is well with you.

Steffi, I'm glad you enjoyed the music. I really liked it too.
